Serpentine-Front Oak Washstand with Mirror

There are no markings on this piece, but based on its provenance (acquired at an antique store in northern Michigan more than 30 years ago) and craftsmanship, this piece almost certainly dates to the turn of the century.

The original shellac finish had become brittle over time, shriveling up to resemble reptile skin. The old finish was removed to reveal a gorgeously rare oak grain. The wood is the star of the show, so it was finished with hemp oil to nourish and protect it. The casing and mirror were lightened with a cool, creamy white mineral paint. The original hardware was cleaned, and the drawers were lined with heavy paper in a soft antique gold. [Artisan: Liz]
